Edit an animated GIF, add sparkling effects, write a caption, or remove a simple background with USAGIF. Open a GIF from your device or choose one from our library, preview your changes, and download the finished animation. No account, payment, or watermark.

Choose GIF Editor for text, glitter, filters, cropping, and animation controls. Choose Background Remover to create a transparent GIF. Both tools process your GIF in your browser, without uploading your local file for editing.

Add Glitter and Visual Effects to Your GIF

Loop-Optimized Glitter and Star Sparkles

Add fine glitter or animated star sparkles to greeting cards, celebration GIFs, and everyday messages. Adjust the amount, size, speed, and color to create anything from a subtle shimmer to a brighter sparkling effect.

The sparkle animation is designed around the GIF’s loop, so the effect cycles continuously without adding an extra pause at the end. Smooth sparkle animation can add movement between longer-held frames while keeping the animation’s playback length unchanged.

The effect loops; the original footage still matters. Glitter will not repair a jump already present between the last and first frames of your source GIF.

Apply Effects to a Selected Area

Cover the whole GIF or limit your effects to a rectangle or ellipse. Soften the selection boundary for a gentler transition, or invert the selection to affect the area outside it. Keep a face clear while adding sparkle around it, or highlight one part of a greeting card.

Change Colors and Create a Different Mood

Turn your GIF into shades of gray, add a warm or cool tone, choose sepia, or make colors more vivid. Fine-tune brightness, contrast, saturation, and filter strength, then preview the animation before downloading.

Add Text to a GIF

Create a meme, personalize a birthday greeting, or add a message to a reaction GIF. Add multiple captions, drag them into place, and adjust their size, font, and colors.

  • Five distinctive font styles: Meme, Clean, Elegant, Handwritten, and Decorative.
  • Independent text and outline colors: use classic white lettering with a black outline or choose your own combination.
  • Adjustable outlines: make the stroke thicker, lighter, or turn it off.
  • Multilingual lettering: font companions support European-language text and Japanese.

New captions stay visible throughout the animation. Text already baked into a GIF is part of its image and cannot be edited as a separate text layer.

Crop, Resize, Rotate, and Reverse an Animated GIF

  • Crop: remove unwanted edges with a freeform selection or a preset aspect ratio.
  • Resize: reduce the output dimensions while keeping the image proportions.
  • Rotate and flip: turn the GIF or mirror it horizontally or vertically.
  • Reverse: play the animation backward.
  • Back-and-forth playback: play forward and then backward without duplicating the turnaround frames.

Use playback and frame stepping to inspect your changes. Undo and redo let you compare adjustments without starting over.

Remove the Background from an Animated GIF

The background remover is designed for GIFs with solid or relatively simple backgrounds. It removes a selected color and nearby shades, helping you clear off-white backgrounds, uneven tones, and faint borders around a subject.

You control how closely colors must match. The same settings apply across the animation, and the transparent export keeps the original dimensions and frame order without adding editor text or effects.

How to Create a Transparent GIF

  1. Open Background Remover. Use the current GIF or open another from your device or the USAGIF library.
  2. Choose the background color. Try Detect Background, or select Pick a Color and click the background directly. The hovered color and pixel coordinates appear below the GIF.
  3. Adjust Similar Shades. Increase the slider gradually to remove neighboring tones. Lower it if parts of your subject start disappearing.
  4. Choose where removal applies. Keep Connected to Background selected to remove matching areas connected to the image edges or existing transparency. Choose Everywhere to remove matching colors inside enclosed areas too.
  5. Clean up the edges. Increase Edge Cleanup slightly if a thin fringe remains. Add more background color samples when needed, up to six.
  6. Check the full animation and download. Compare Original and Result, inspect against light and dark preview backgrounds, and download your transparent GIF.

Get Cleaner Results Without Losing Details

Start with a low shade tolerance and leave Edge Cleanup at zero. Increase one setting at a time while checking the subject’s outline. Higher tolerance removes a wider range of colors; stronger edge cleanup also removes a thin layer around the remaining subject.

Connected removal can preserve matching colors enclosed inside your subject. However, similar-colored parts that touch the background may disappear too. Complex scenery, detailed hair, motion blur, and transparent objects are harder to separate with this color-based tool.

The checkerboard, white, and black preview backgrounds are inspection aids only. They are not added to your transparent download.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this GIF editor free?

Yes. You can edit and download GIFs without an account or payment. Exports have no added watermark.

Can I combine background removal with text or glitter?

The two modes work separately, and their exports do not mix. To combine them, remove the background and download the transparent GIF first. Then open that file in GIF Editor to add captions, filters, or sparkles.

Can I edit individual GIF frames?

You can step through frames to inspect the animation and choose a background color from a particular frame. Editing and removal settings apply across the animation; this is not an individual-frame painting tool.

Why do transparent GIF edges sometimes look sharp?

GIF pixels can be fully visible or fully transparent, but cannot retain partial transparency. Fine hair and soft shadows may therefore look sharper after export. Check both light and dark preview backgrounds before downloading.

Does processing use my device?

Yes. Editing, background removal, and export happen in your browser. Nothing’s uploaded to our server. Large or long GIFs take more processing time and may exceed the tool’s limits. Keep the page open until your download is ready.

Can you add a certain feature to the editor / background remover?

We constantly improve our GIF editor, and would love to hear your feedback in the comments! We may include requested features in future updates.
